The CIA Exam

What Does the CIA Certification Require?

For CIA exam eligibility, any person with a bachelor's degree in any field is eligible. Candidates must also have at least two years of internal audit experience to earn this internationally acclaimed certification, an important step toward demonstrating your core internal audit skills.

And if a student is interested to pursue CIA designation without earning a bachelor’s degree, then he/she may require up to seven years of work experience.

What Does the Certified Internal Auditor Exam Cover?

To become a certified internal auditor, candidates need to attempt 325 multiple-choice questions in 6.5 hours.


  • Part one emphasizes the essentials of Internal Auditing. 

This section tests basic skills like an in-depth understanding of concepts like internal auditing, risk management, and financial control. Assessment is also based on specific industry standards and principles related to audit management, consulting, and quality assurance in conformance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing

Time limit:150 minutes(maximum time allotted for any section)


  • Part two covers the internal auditing practice p[ertaining to compliance 

60% of this section's content consisted of audit Managing, planning, and communicating the results. Performing internal audits proficiency is assessed.

Time limit:120 minutes required to complete


  • Part three includes business acumen-related auditing. 

Topics covered are business acumen, financial management, information security, and information technology. 

Time limit:120 minutes required to complete.


Candidates can choose to appear and complete all three parts or sections in one attempt. After registering for an exam section, candidates get 180 days to complete it and earn this reputable accreditation and 3 years are allowed to complete the exams.
